I knew Charles from a writing workshop we took years ago, so I was a little jealous when I read his first book American Weather but that disolved because it was a great novel. Same with National Treasures--if Flannery O'Connor and Raymond Carver had a baby, this would be a result. Incredibly intense short stories that paint a portrait of the United States whose broad stripes and bright stars is tainted with anger and loss.Tags : National Treasures [Charles McLeod] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I was and am absolutely blown away by National Treasures. A superb collection of short stories. A stunning reflection of America- done, over, horrible and better than ever.
Scary, sad, brave. All of us being treaures, I guess, in our own ornamentally scarred way. While reading these stoies, I felt both part of something, and very lonely. McLeod writes phrases I've never read before. He juxtaposes words that I'm not used to seeing put to such use. After reading books for decades, it's a marvel to be impressed upon.
Each story in 'National Treasures' presents a change of mood and each character inhabits a particular space coming together to create "a portrait of America in all its breadth."
The prose in this collection of stories is gorgeous and precise throughout--..."the delimited choices most chiefly informed by the Seller's belief that each person is a country unto themselves, and possesses a record of conflict and treaty, has customs and boundaries and scandals and ways--that every small piece of the self is worth something..."
He writes the short sentence. He writes the long sentence. He writes a story with more pages than it has periods. He writes a story into an auction catalog, or perhaps he writes an auction catalog into a story.
McLeod is consistently surprising, writing about characters from all walks of life--quintessentially American characters.
And in the end, how capable are any of us at outrunning our origins?
A true pleasure to read.
