I don't know how to review this in a way that shares the gritty, grimy, iridescent wonder of this series. This is a hyper realistic fairytale trilogy about small town life and the pains of adolescence and chainsmoking grandmothers and trash talking mermaids and Polish folklore.

It feels like one of the more important and new things I've read in a while (though Michelle Tea started the series in 2013 and I have just found it).

The third book is expected in 2019. I desperately hope so, because I already miss Sophie.

For readers of Francesca Lia Block and Mira Grant and Catherynne Valente and folktales and when falling off the cusp of YA.
I've been reading her since "Passionate Mistakes" was first published and this is her best work.
Great series! I love that it's about a female teen protagonist, but her story does not in any way center around her romantic life. Love these books!
