Ed and Brock work as grave robbers in early 19th century England, resigning themselves to such an odious job in order to make ends meet. During one of their jobs, the two are approached by a rival gang of grave robbers and are separated in the battle that follows. While Brock stands and fights, Ed tricks some of the gang into a chase through the woods -- but it's all part of the duo's plan, and they will meet later at the pub in Lock's Landing. When Ed eventually makes it to the pub a few days later, Brock is nowhere to be found. As Ed soon discovers from a Mr. Albert Swicker, Brock and a few others volunteered to help find the animal that was attacking and killing people on the estate of Lord and Lady Lockette. Ed needs to find Brock so the only course is to follow Swicker back to the Lockette Estate to search for him. When they arrive at the estate, no lights shine from any of the windows, and the front door hangs open tempting them to enter the darkness. Soon, the two find themselves battling the re-animated dead and something worse -- something hungrier and more dangerous than the dead who roam the estate.
"Cryptic" was quite a bit of fun to read. Lots of action and zombie goodness, but Chaney provides an interesting twist with the other creatures who are also trying to capture Ed -- the sleek and pale bodies with sharp claws, their natural aptitude for hunting humans, and the fact that they, too, are afraid of the zombies. The fast-pacing of the story and the well-drawn characters (especially Ed and the unnamed female creature) kept me reading into the wee hours, and by the end I was wondering along with Ed, what happened to Brock? The perfect set-up for a second book which I hope is on the way....

Cryptic DA Chaney TW Brown 9781936730124 Books Reviews
(No spoilers) This is a very entertaining book and I disagree with the negative comments. The negative comments on here say two main things 1) The book is short. 2) The story jumps around too much or doesn't have a main plot.
1. The book does not take too long to read yes, but it leaves you hooked and imagination running wild with what could happen next, not just for the characters but for the world that has been laid out.
2. I personally like when books show different perspectives from different characters. The book is in third person and fits well. If you have good characters in a story, each one is well thought out and those characters will perceive others differently based on their upbringing and values. You miss so much from a created world if a story is in first person because it is only through one lens, usually a lens that you get board with quickly. Not in Cryptic. The story is told from the perspective of nobles, thieves, and flesh craving monsters! Think of each jump in the story as its own short story horror flick. This totally ok to do in a book. Each event is very entertaining to read, and does have a purpose in terms of describing the chaos developing the area.
In the end, I love this book because each scene has very accurate descriptors that paint the images in your mind and feels like a horror movie, a good horror movie that is not predictable, anything can happen!
After starting on a book I was going to review and not being able to get through it (I won't post anything that negative), it was a relief to step into one of DA's stories. I was expecting good things based on her short stories and I wasn't disappointed.
The novella begins with Marcus reflecting on the newly constructed family crypt, and the tragic death of his father. Marcus blamed himself for that, and the crypt was a means of atonement. Marcus is then attacked and dies as gruesomely as his father had.
The story then jumps to over a hundred years later. We are now introduced to Guliana, a poor sole being coerced into a marriage to further her family's ambitions. She is travelling with the man expected to become her husband. Her lanky wooer, Conor, sensing her reluctance, tries to charm her with words. Before he can get far, they are attacked by something horrible and Guliana is carried off. Conor's search for her leads to a dark and disturbing discovery.
The story travels again in time to almost a hundred years later and we are presented with a subterranean creature who is an offshoot of humans. We learn of her kind's history and their interaction with the undead in the area. DA adds in a couple of grave-robbers and the local nobility, and then brings the story all together.
I loved the way this took place over centuries and introduced mutant creatures and walking dead for a horrific back-drop, all the while providing you with fascinating characters and rich history. Then, at the centre of it all, is the crypt. DA is a natural writer who is well-skilled at creating intrigue and building suspense. This isn't for the faint of heart, with plenty of violence and gore one would expect from a tale of horror intermingled with the colourful storyline. This was a terrific read and I'd love to see something longer from this author.
