While I like these stories (typos and bad sentence structure not included), I'm really, REALLY tired of every single supernatural problem being Ethan and Merit's fault unless they play detective, use their own personal time and money, to solve it.Every single books theme has been the same. It's the vampires fault for everything even when it's clearly not, but life doesn't get to go on until they turn detective agency and solve the case.
It's old and doesn't work anymore after nearly ten books.
Ethan and Merit are the stars. The stars have sidekicks.
Someone causes massive problems and in order to keep the hero's of the books front and center, they take it upon themselves to solve each and every crime, problem and everything in between.
I'm surprised this writer hasn't had them open "Cadogan's Supernatural Detective Agency" yet.
If the shoe fits.....
This book finally got to me. It was too easy and didn't write well with this story. An entire magical attack happens and it will be Ethan, Merit and company's fault, unless they play detective and solve this latest case, while everyone else sits on their arses and just whines and complains.
Like I said...getting really old.
There are better ways to keep your main characters at the forefront of your story.

Wild Things Chicagoland Vampires Chloe Neill 9780451415196 Books Reviews
Wild Things by Chloe Neill definitely has the feel of a filler book ... something to tide us over until something really big happens in the upcoming books. Normally that would annoy me as a reader and keep me from really enjoying the story, but for some reason that did not happen as I read this newest addition to the Chicagoland Vampires series. I think that I could enjoy this story because Merit and Ethan are together for so much of it, and I enjoyed the dynamics of their relationship as they worked through the newest problem to face Cadogan House.
What worked
Ethan! I adore this character. He improves every scene he is in, especially when he has the opportunity to shine as head of his House. Unfortunately, in this story he spends a lot of time away from his beloved House as he and Merit hide out in shifter territory. This gives new opportunity for him to shine in an almost ambassador sort of role as he navigates the touchy politics of shifters. I love the fierce love he has for Merit ... a love that manages to be deep without ever roaming into sappy territory. He has a major step to take in future books, and I can't wait to see where this goes.
Merit. These books work because of the great inner voice of the first person narrator, Merit. True ... maybe the pop culture references can get a little tedious after awhile, but overall I would say that the reason I love this series so much stands with Merit and her trademark sarcasm and humor. After a few books where this Sentinel seemed ridiculously weak and inefficient as a vampire fighter, it seems like Merit is finally getting back her fighter mojo. Thank goodness. She works terribly as a main narrator when she loses her strength as a fighter and as the one person who can really stand up to Ethan's ego.
The secondary characters. Chloe Neill may be one of the best creators of excellent, interesting, and strong secondary characters in this genre. I always end her books wishing that I could have even more scenes with these characters. After a few books where these characters, and especially Mallory, were weak and a bit annoying, it seems as if everyone is coming into their own and figuring out their roles in this crazy world. That does nothing but strengthen these stories.
What I wish were a bit different
The villain for this story. There are actually two villain story lines, and I think I would have preferred that Chloe would have picked only one to focus on. The new mayor and her attacks on the supernatural would have made a great book on its own. The disappearance of supernaturals would have been okay as well ... although, to be honest, I didn't really care for the way this one played out in the end (maybe it was a bit too sentimental and gooey by the end). Because of the dual story line I felt as if the overall story was weakened since neither problem could be explored on a deeper level.
Character growth. Like I say, this book is more of a filler book. Because of that, there was very little character growth. There was a HUGE potential for a character growth story with Merit as he has to decide if she can let Ethan begin a quest that could ultimately end in his immortal death or at least a big separation from Merit. That would have been interesting to explore even more, and I think that would have showcased Merit's growth as a character, as a vampire, and as a member of Cadogan House. I would have liked to know more of her journey in this, but because it was not really discussed much, the focus on character growth is just missing from the story.
If you are looking for lots of new revelation and character growth in this newest addition to this series, you aren't going to find it here. Fans of the series should be okay with it, although I would say that it is becoming clear that Chloe Neill should start looking for a way to bring the series to a close in a good way. Sometimes beloved series can go downhill really fast when an author can't let go and end it on a good note. I hope that doesn't happen with this series. There are still some great things that seem ready to happen in the upcoming books, though, so I am still on board for these next books in the series. I predict lots and lots of AWESOME Ethan scenes. For now ... this latest addition gets four stars from me. I enjoyed it, and for some reason I have a strong desire to re-read some of the first books of this series to remind myself just how Ethan and Merit came to be the power couple they are. Four stars.
3.5/5.0
I really do enjoy this series. Each book faces another challenge to conquer and another mystery to solve for Merit, Ethan and their friends... because of this, there are always two different storylines running simultaneiously. Sometimes I think the random mysteries overpower the overall plotlines (which are ultimately the reason we keep coming back) but they are always interesting and keep the reader turning the pages.
There are a few threads that don’t make much sense - such as why Merit and Ethan are ALWAYS the ones responsible for every single problem when much of the time those problems are caused by others. For instance, in this installment, why didn’t Gabriel and the rest of the shifters get involved instead of dumping the problem on Merit? It was THEIR problem! Also, why doesn’t the other houses deal with their own problems? They are getting harrassed but they consistantly just sit back and demand Ethan take care of everything. Doesn’t make any sense!
I am glad that Merit and Ethan’s relationship is on solid ground and they are facing the world together instead of all the drama between them. And, it is fun to watch Merit’s confidence and character grow with each new story.
Overall diving into Merit and Ethan’s world is still a very enjoyable way to spend an evening. )
