I've read many Scandinavian thrillers in the past few years and Alvtegen, IMO, is one of the better writers. She really understands, develops and articulates her characters' state of mind. This is the fourth book I're read by this author and each time I'm impressed by her understanding of human nature, and her ability to relay those emotions narratively. There is not a lot of "action" but there is an intense and personal look into various characters' actions and motivations, and these ring true.Eva used to think she had a perfect life, but she's a smart lady, and slowly it's dawning on her that her surly husband might be having an affair. Across town Jonas is almost creepy in his devotion to Anna, a beautiful artist in a coma. These two are raw and potentially toxic, and when their paths cross, nothing good is going to come of it.
The author sometimes writes scenes from two perspectives, and these are exquisite -- Twain's Diary of Adam and Eve as written by Alfred Hitchcock. The structure is complex, a feature, I think, of the best Scandinavian fiction. The ending is quite disturbing and chilling.
At the time of this writing there are only four books by Alvtegen translated into English. Having read them all now, I'm impressed by the variety of situations she writes about; unencumbered by a detective, she lays bare the deepest, most authentic emotions for complex and very human characters, while justice does not always involve the judicial system.
I do hope other books will be translated. I am very interested to see what Karin Alvtegen devises next. Her novels are: Shadow, Missing, Shame (also published as Sacrifice) and Betrayal.

As always Ms. Alvtegen's writing is masterful. Which makes the story a horror story and very depressing.
Karin writes a good story but I wasn't totally rapt in it. Perhaps I'll try some more and hopefully enjoy more.
I love this authoress. Her books are exciting and I have read them all!
I have read two of her other novels and believe she's one of Europe's strongest writers in the pyschological thriller genre. This novel did not disappoint -- I thought it was stunning. Her other novel _Shame_ is quite strong as well. These books are character studies where everything is a bit off-balance and contact with another character, however brief, can have drastically unsettling results. Strongly recommend!
Book has arrived. Thank you!!!!
I didn't know anything about this author when I downloaded the book, and I was pleasantly surprised.
The story moves along fairly quickly and at time it feels almost like a dark comedy of errors- but it's hardly funny. The only criticims I have is probably related to the translation. The prose feels at times sloppy, as if the book hasn't been edited in English. Shame, because in many other ways this is a really good read- great characters, great plot.
I have gotten into reading some of the authors from other countries and have enjoyed their writing. This book was ok. I liked it better than her other book, Shadow that I read.
